For the 2024 edition of Design Miami, Friedman Benda is pleased to present a group installation, inspired by Mexican architect Javier Senosiain’s architectural philosophy of implementing organic forms into living spaces.
Deepening its collaborative relationship with Javier Senosiain, Friedman Benda is proud to present the celebrated and idiosyncratic architect’s first ever collection of limited edition furniture. Using organic forms as a way of confronting the often rigid and linear discipline of modern architecture — both formally and conceptually — Senosiain explores the relationship between individuals, place, and space. Inspired by the vernacular craft of Mexican tilework, these colorful and playful pieces are traditional yet modern, coherent yet heterogenous. Reworking traditional materials into living spaces is a constant in Senosiain’s work; spaces that, in his words, “would be similar to the womb, an animal’s lair, a troglodytic dwelling, an igloo.” The outdoor dining set, planters, mirror, and bench presented in the booth are made by the same artisans, applying the same principles and techniques of his buildings on a smaller scale.
The 2024 booth will launch a lighting work by formafantasma (Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin), introducing the Italian design-duo’s collaboration with the gallery. Following this debut, formafantasma will present a full collection for their first solo exhibition in the United States at Friedman Benda in the spring of 2025.
The Design Miami. 2024 installation will also debut Nimbus , Dutch designer Joris Laarman’s latest series, contemplating on the evershifting shapes of clouds. Japanese design powerhouse nendo unveils their newest pendant iteration of the hyouri series, previously shown as floor lamps in a 2022 exhibition at Nijō Castle and Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto. Materially and geographically in conversation with Senosiain’s work, Mexico City-based duo SANGREE, formed by René Godínez-Pozas and Carlos Lara, present two stone and ceramic feline sculptures inspired by pre-Columbian artifacts and pop culture.
The installation is completed by works from Carmen D’Apollonio, Farrell Hundley, Fernando Laposse, Raphael Navot, and Thaddeus Wolfe.
