Marcel Wanders is one of international design’s most recognizable, prolific and inventive figures. Wanders’ subversive, often humorous designs reinterpret historical archetypes—blurring the lines between disciplines and creating a fantasy around objects and spaces.
Born in 1963 in Boxtel, the Netherlands, Wanders graduated from the School of the Arts Arnhem in 1988. He became a recognized force in the industry with his creation of the Knotted Chair (1996) for the design collective Droog Design, which paired ‘high tech’ materials with ‘low tech’ production methods. Wanders established his own studio in 1996, which went on to realize over 1,900 projects and collaborations with companies such as Alessi, Bisazza, Flos, KLM, Puma, and Swarovski. In 2001, Marcel co-founded the widely successful design label Moooi.
Wanders’ works are in the permanent collections of institutions such as the Centre Pompidou, Paris; Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam; Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; New Orleans Museum of Art, LA; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA; and Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.
He lives and works in Amsterdam.
